Comparing my first and second interview
I feel that my second interview is better than the first interview. Because I have experience when I do the second interview. When I do my first interview, I feel a little bit nervous, and I do not know how to start my interview with my interviewee. And I need more time to prepare my questions. During the second interview, I feel more comfortable. I can accord to the first interview’s questions to do my second interview. I change the place for interviewing. The first time I interview him at library, and the second time I interview him at an Chinese restaurant—China Star, the environment for interviewing let us feel more relaxed and comfortable. I interview the people from different country during my interviews. The first people that I interview is from Korea, the second people that I interview is from Saudi Arabia. I think I can learn and touch more different culture for interviewing people who are from different country. Through the first interview, I found that Korea’s culture is similar to culture in China. During the second interview, I touch a very different culture. It includes: food, education, religious belief and culture. I pay more attention in their culture during my second interview. I find that the women in Saudi Arabia have less right than the men in Saudi Arabia. Because we do the second interview during a Chinese restaurant, the time that I spend is longer than the first interview. The first interview takes me about one hour, and I spend about two hours on my second interview. For comparing with other interviews that I read, I find that their questions are more comprehensive than my questions. When I do the third interview, I will prepare more questions that I want to know.
The second interview
Interview preparation
There are a lot of students from Saudi Arabia, so I want to interview a student from Saudi Arabia. I decide to interview a Saudi Arabia student who still study in IEC. I find a friend who are still study in IEC, to let him to help me to find a student who is from Saudi Arabia.
I let my friend help me to ask his classmate it he has time to accept my interview. He is pleasure to help me to do this interview. I decide to invite he to go to china star—an chinese restaurant. This saturday, my friend, his classmate and me went to china star. His name is Hamed. He has been there for two years.
I organize my question from several main parts: holiday, education, policy and food. Through the first interview, I find that I have a deep interested in these three parts.
Interview report
Because my friend tells me that Hamed likes chinese food very much, so I decide to invite him to go to eat chinese food with me, when we finish our lunch, I can interview him.。
During this interview, I ask Hamed many questions which I want to understand Saudi Arabia. When I studied at IEC, I heard that there is a policy in Saudi Arabia, the man in Saudi Arabia is allowed to marry with four women. It is amazing for me, so I asked Hamed this question. I found that the policy I heard is ture. But Hamed told me even though the men in his country can be allowed to marry with four women, most of the men in his country always just marry with one woman. Even though I have heard this policy before, I still felt amazing when I heard this new again. I think it is a huge different culture with my country.

Because we do this interview at a restaurant, it is noisy, I do not record what he said by video, I just record the point that he says, I can summary this interview from next four parts.
Holiday
Maybe many workers and staffs in China are very toilsome. In China, the additional work in weekend is very common. Weekend and holiday are just an opportunity to make more money to many Chinese. But we have a few three days holidays like International Labor Day and Tomb-sweeping Day, but New Year’s Day is one day holiday. National Day is the longest holiday except Spring Festival, it is a seven days holiday. The most important holiday to Chinese is Spring Festival, it is Chinese New Year, and the date of Spring Festival is uncertain every year, because it depends on the traditional Chinese calendar. In Arabia, they have only three important holidays one year. Eid al-Fitr is after Ramadan, and Ramadan will last one month. During this month, people in Arabia will not eat in daytime, it is called fasting. After the sunset, they can eat and drink. So Eid al-Fitr is to celebrate the successful Ramadan. Eid al-Adha is another important holiday. During these days, people will kill sheep in the morning, and separate it to three parts, one is given to pool people, one is given to neighbor, the last one store at home. The third holiday is just National Day in September 23th.
Education
Chinese students may are the most toilsome in the world. Our study task is very heavy. The primary school students start class at 8:00am, and end at 3:00pm. But the students in middle school and high school have to study for more than ten hours every day. We needn’t to pay for our primary and middle education, just need to buy the textbooks. The parents and teachers in China think entering a good university or a good college is the success of students. So we have to study hard. In Saudi Arabia, there are government school and private school. The government schools are all free, they needn’t to pay any tuition. Their classes usually begin at 7:00am and end at 1:00pm. During Ramadan, the time is shorter, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. The universities in Arabia are also different. The private are more expensive, but they can get more courses in private schools.
Food
In China, the most common food maybe white rice. Many people like eating rice as their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But as I know, some people in the north of China like noodles or dumplings and other floury food better. Rice is more popular in south of China. We drink boiling water or hot water usually, but we don’t like cold water, and we also like drinking tea. In young peoples’ opinion, the soft drink is more popular. Hamed told me, Arabs liked drinking cold water and the soft drink was very popular in his country. Saudi Arabia is also an Asian country, so it has many similar cultures with China. They also like eating rice and drinking regular tea, but they always cook rice with many other materials just like vegetable, meat and chicken. The most popular food in Arabia is called Cabsah, it include chicken, meat, fish and shrimp. I think it must be very delicious. Arabs never eat the chicken paw and pork, and they will not drink anything with alcohol, even if the food cooked with alcohol, it’s really different from Chinese.
Culture
All women, regardless of age, are required to have a male guardian. Women cannot vote or be elected to high political positions. Cultural norms impose restrictions on women when in public, and these are enforced by the religious police. They include requiring women to sit in separate specially designated family sections in restaurants, to wear an abaya and to conceal their hair. There is also efectively a ban on women driving. And Saudi Arabia men are allowed to marry with four women at the same time, it is unlegal in China. And all of people in Saudi Arabia are Islam.

My first interview
Interview preparation
I am interested in watching the movie from
Korea. When the teacher asks us to interview the people, I decide to interview
the people who are from korea, because I want to know more information about
the Korea. I have a friend, one of his friends is korean, her name is Yoon.
Actually, I have seen Yoon before, but we
do not talk to each other. When I say I want to interview her, she is so glad
to help me to do the interview. She has been SCSU for about 2 years. Then we
arranged this interview at 7:00 pm, March 11. And both of us think liabrary is
the fittest place for us to do the interview. We meet each other at the coner
of the second of the liabrary. She does not want me to have a record, so I just
can record what she said on my paper.
I organize the questions which I asked her
include several parts: education, holiday, transportation, sport, food and
religion. Because both of Korea and China are belong to Asia, most of the
culture is the same.
Interview report
Yoon is come from Korea, like China, Korea
also belong to Asia. So most of the culture is similar to China, just like some
pronounciation of Korean is similar to Chinese.
During this interview, I asked Yoon many questions,
they included education, holiday, sport, food, transpotation and religion. I
find both of Chinese and Korean are allowed to school at age 7 to 8. And we
have the same transpotation tools. Most of Korean are buddahist just like most
of Chinese. But there is one thing make me feel surprised. The date of
“Children’s Day” in Korea is different with China. The date in Korea is May 5th,
but in China, the date is June 1st. I think it is interesting.
Country report
The full name of Korea is “Republic of
Korea”, it is located in Northeast of Asia. There are ocean around three sides
of Korea: the east, the south and the west. And Korea is an emerging developed
country. The legal land scope of korea is the
entire Korean Peninsula and the islands around the Korean Peninsula. The area
of Korea is the 4/9 of Korean Peninula’s area. Its area is 99,600 km2. Since
the 1960s, the Korean government implemented a new economic policy, it made the
economic of Korea had a large development. This new policy made Korea become a
medium developed country by one of the world’s poorest country.
The number of population of Korea is 50,087,000. (the
end of January 2011). The main race is Korean. The number of population of Korean
is the 99 percent of the whole population of Korea. It is a single nation
state. The main language of Korea is Korean language. Most of the pronounctiation of this language are from
China. 10 percent of the pronounciation is from America.
The Korean national emblem:
file:///Users/macbookpro/Desktop/guohui.jpg
It is from a flower named flos hibisci. The
white symbolizes peace an pure. The yellow symboizes prosperous. The pattern of
the middle symbolizes the traditonal culture of Korea. It states harmonious between
people and nature.
There is a holiday connect with religion, Korean
celebrate this day in April 8th, people celebrate it for the born of
Budda. Always, the people who are buddhist celebrate this day. There is another
holiday called “Independence Day”, the date of this holiday is August 15th.
There still has a lot of other holidays in Korea. Many holidays is similar to my
own country.

semester.
Lian: Oh, I can understand, there are so many
homework. Actually, I am interested in watching Korean Movies. Druing those
movies, I find that children always go to school when they are young, I have a
question, at what age you go to school?
Yoon: I went to school when I was seven years old,
the legal age for Korean to go to school is 7 years old. Before we went to
school, we always were sent to the children care center, it is a place for
children play games together.
Lian: It is similar to China. Was there have some
typical days for a child in your coutry?
Yoon: Yeah, I know there is a typical day in China
for a child, it is called “Children’s Day”, right? In Korea, it is also called
“Children’s Day”, but the date is different with China, we celebrate this day
at May 5th. During this day, there are many activitied for children
to join in, and the parents will be with the children, I like this day very
much when I was a child, because every “Children’s Day”, I would receive a gift
from my parents.
Lian: Oh, really? It is amazing for me. In my
opinion, I think the date for “Children’s Day” are the same day for the whole
world. So, do you like sports?
Yoon: Not so much.
Lian: In China, the famous sport is Ping-pong. What
the famous sport in your country?
Yoon: It must be football. When I studyed in Korea,
every boy prefered to play football when they finish the class. It made them
exciting.
Lian: Do you have religious beliefs?
Yoon: No, but my grandmother has. She is a
buddahist.
Lian: Does she have any rituals in regards to her
belief?
Yoon: Yeah, she will go to temple to pray.
Sometimes, she also bring me to the temple for praying. I think it is
interesting when I first time to go to do the pray.
Lian: How about the transportation in your country?
Yoon: There are many kinds of transportation tools
in Korea, such as: metro, bus and taxi. I think it is convinient. How about
China?
Lian: Even though there are also many kinds of
transportation tools in China, the transportation in China is still so bad,
because there are so many people in China, it is crowed. Have you eaten Chinese
food before?
Yoon: Yeah, when I stayed in Korea, I had been to
chinese restaurant in Korea, I ate cooked pork. It is so delicious.
Lian: It is sweet, for me, I like spicy food, in my
hometown, the food is spicy. Do you like spicy food?
Yoon: I am afraid of spicy food, when I eat spicy
food, I will drink much water. But I want to try the food from your hometown.
Lian: You can go to China during the summer
vocation if you go back to Korea, I will bring to eat many delicious food. How
do you think about SCSU?
Yoon: Actually, I think there is too cold. When the
winter come, I even do not want to go outside. But I think SCSU is good, the
tuition is not expensive, and there is a center for international students. I
think it is convinient.
Lian: Yeah, but I also can not stand the windy
there. Thank you so much for helping me do the interview.
Yoon: You are welcome. It is my pleasure. If you
come to Korea, you can send email to me, I will bring you eat many Korean food.
